L3Harris Technologies

Mechanical Engineering Intern

May - July 2019 • Clifton, NJ

What I liked

It was a great general engineering experience, and challenged me to use CAD, something I had used before but not mastered. My manager made sure I did work that was actually beneficial for the company, and the kept me busy with interesting work.

What I wish was different

I wish the location itself was more exciting; I mostly sat at my desk all day. I also am very passionate about sustainable practices, and there didn't seem to be much push for that at Clifton.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions. There's nothing worse than getting stuck on a problem and not doing anything to find the answer.

Mechanical Engineer

May - August 2019 • Melbourne, FL

What I liked

Fellow employees were friendly. The work was satisfying and useful to the company.

What I wish was different

A little more work when my projects slowed.

Advice

Go into internships prepared to work but also not afraid to ask questions and not know what you are doing. There are a ton of new words and jargon and it will take time to learn so take careful notes at meetings.

What I liked

I had a lot of creative freedom in this project to develop what I wanted in the way that I wanted.

What I wish was different

I wish that the selection process for the program happens earlier in the year so if teams do not get accepted they can still get internships.

Advice

The experience in the Innovate: L3Harris summer project is dependent on having a reliable team that you can work well with.

IT Intern

May - August 2019 • Melbourne, FL

What I liked

L3Harris is a growing company that looks to challenge their interns through interactive and engaging projects that make a difference. The work is enjoyable with the location being an added bonus. With a wide variety of activities available to participate in, there is always something to do.

What I wish was different

The onboarding process and housing arrangements could be improved. Many interns felt delayed in beginning work due to the slow onboarding process. Housing options also felt limited with some interns having to relocate to a different location before the conclusion of their internship.

Advice

Take initiative, ask questions, and network with others. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved so make the most of it!

Operations Intern

February 2019 • Greenville, TX

What I liked

The internship was a great opportunity for networking and determining what kind of culture you want to work in. It was also very flexible and allowed me to work as much as I could depending on my schedule. I got to work with all the different aspects of operations and work on projects that allowed me to learn a lot in a short amount of time.

What I wish was different

I wish it was a bit more structured, but as a new internship, the structure is improving with time.

Advice

Software Engineer

May - August 2017 • Rochester, NY

What I liked

I really enjoyed the company and environment. I was very much a large company with a small company feel in the building that I was in. The other employees were very friendly and social. It was clear that they liked their job, and they were very willing to provide support and guidance. The work was interesting and challenging. I definitely had a good time.

What I wish was different

I wish it had been a little closer. The office is a good 25 minute drive from where I live (West Henrietta area) and it was a somewhat inconvenient commute.

Advice

If you get a chance to intern here I would say ask questions about the work and the company, and go to intern events. They seemed really interested in doing events for the interns to learn about the company and to meet important people within the company. I was under the impression that they look to hire from the group of interns, so I would say if you would like to work there make sure you show your interest in the company.
