Strategic Communications Intern
May - August 2020 • Washington, DC
What I liked
I felt like I was significantly helping the organization. At times I got fairly big assignments, including writing official press releases and speeches for NLADA President Jo-Ann Wallace. My two bosses were very friendly and understanding, and I felt very comfortable in the position. Although there was a lot of work, it was never overwhelming or difficult to complete (which is good, since this internship was unpaid).
What I wish was different
Since I had this internship the summer of 2020, it was completely remote, which was disappointing but necessary. As a result, I rarely ever interacted with anyone other than my two bosses. I had almost no interactions with other interns or staff members. This was entirely due to me being remote though, and would probably be solved if you did the internship in-person.
Advice
Despite being at a legal aid organization, this is a COMMUNICATIONS internship. You won't be involved in any legal matters.
